The Coder Founders

106 agency deals, 5 we could confirm, and what happened next

My AI agents and I checked 106 agency deals and could confirm 5 coder founders: here's what they built, where they went after the deal, and why I think AI changes the picture for small businesses.

01

The short answer

We checked 106 agency deals by big ad holding companies in Asia-Pacific and North America since 1998. We could confirm 5 coder founders. Most built data and tech shops.

Coder founder: a founder still working at the agency when the deal was done, with a computer science or computer engineering degree we could confirm on public record. It counts degrees, not coding skill, and I'm not in the count.

02

Why I looked

I was a software engineer who didn't know what advertising was. My AI agents checked 106 agency deals for founders like me. They could confirm 5.

That was me in Kyoto, before I moved to Saigon. In 2007 I co-founded the digital agency Sofresh there with my friend Justin Cohen. WPP bought our agency in 2012. When we took over JWT Vietnam in 2018, we were 150+ people, and I was CEO of Wunderman Thompson Vietnam from 2019 to 2022. This report asks a simple question: how many founders who sold to the big ad holding companies had a computer science or computer engineering degree?

I'd be on the list, but you'd have to take my word for it. I studied computer science at SFU and computer systems technology at BCIT, and the source for that is me. So I left myself out of the 5.

What we found

  1. 5 out of 106. We could confirm 5 coder founders in 106 deals. Three have a computer science degree. Two have a computer engineering degree (one of them in electrical and computer engineering), and one of those two also has a master's in computer science.
  2. Most built data and tech shops. Of the 5, three built data, performance or marketing technology businesses, one built a web and tech shop, and one built an enterprise software consultancy.
  3. Most stayed inside the network. All 5 kept working at the business after the deal. Four held senior roles inside the holding company's network. One later left and built something new.
  4. Where and when. Four of the 5 deals were in Asia-Pacific and one was in North America. Three were with Dentsu, one with WPP and one with Omnicom. One was in the 2000s, three in the 2010s and one in the 2020s.
  5. Degrees are often missing from public record. For many founders in these deals, we could not find their degree in any public source, especially in Asia-Pacific. "Not found" means no public source, not "no degree". That is a limit of this study as much as a finding.

What I think it means

I think AI is pulling code and creative into the same room. In our count, the coder founders mostly built data and tech shops. Now AI agents do a lot of the work an agency used to sell by the hour, and someone has to design, build and check them. That's why I think small businesses will gain the most: you can now get the creative thinking and the systems thinking from one small team.

How we counted

  • Scope: founder-led independent digital, tech, data, ecommerce and experience agencies bought by the big ad holding companies: WPP, Dentsu, Omnicom (including IPG), Publicis and Havas. Asia-Pacific and North America, 1998 to 2026.
  • What counts as a deal: each deal is counted once, with the buyer as of the deal date. Stakes count as deals as well as full sales. 118 deals looked at; 106 in scope.
  • The test: a founder still working at the agency when the deal was done, with a computer science or computer engineering degree we could confirm on public record (a university page, an official bio, a holding company release, a regulatory filing or reputable trade press, opened and read).
  • Sofresh is the reference case, not one of the 106. It is the agency I co-founded, and I'm not in the count.
  • Who did the work: my AI agents searched and drafted the research. One of them, Cortex, opened every source again and re-checked each confirmed founder on 24 Oct 2026.

Limits: many founders' degrees are not on public record, so the real number may be higher. Two more founders have a computer science degree on public record, but we found no day-to-day role for either when their deals were made: one was still a board director in the year his deal was agreed, and the other was listed as a non-executive chair. We left them out. IPG deals are counted under IPG, which became part of Omnicom in November 2025. Deals made by Aegis before Dentsu bought it in 2013 are left out, because Aegis was not one of the groups we covered. We don't publish deal values or stake sizes. The count can change as new sources appear, and this page shows the date it was updated.

Questions

What is a coder founder in this report?

A founder still working at the agency when the deal was done, with a computer science or computer engineering degree we could confirm on public record. It counts degrees, not coding skill.

Which deals does it cover?

Deals where WPP, Dentsu, Omnicom (including IPG), Publicis or Havas bought all or part of a founder-led agency in Asia-Pacific or North America, from 1998 to 2026. We looked at 118 deals and 106 were in scope.

Why aren't you in the count?

The source for my degree is my own record, not a public one we could check. So I left myself out of the 5.

Can I use the data?

Yes. The data is free to use under CC BY 4.0. Please credit "The Coder Founders, Ly Viet Vu, lyvietvu.com".
